This week at school we did a Design Challenge - Reagan There was a package and then we opened it and there was an iPad from Mrs. Mulholland. She said something was missing from our classroom. We had to build something that our class didn't have yet. - Vera We built a tree with a bird - Amara We did a bell to keep everybody quiet - Lauren Me and Ivy were making a turtle - Micah In reading this week we learned about the 5 finger rule - Mohammed We learned to build Stamina - Sienna We learned the pick strategy to pick "Just Right" books - Gavin We were looking for books for our cubbies for our books to be safe - Sarah In writing this week we wrote about stuff that Mrs. Gregoire found on a nature walk - Levi We wrote a letter to Mrs. Gregoire - Nelson In Math this week we made a Math About Me page - Boma We were making name patterns for our math journals and we coloured them - Micah https://gfletchy.com/humpty-dumpty/ In gym we were practicing whistles - Vera
We learned new games - Gavin We played hot dog tag - Sienna We talked about the whistles and we played "Chop the Cake" in music- Lauren We played a game with the whistles - Mohammed We went to music - Margo We practiced singing in music - Mac We were using balance scales to compare mass this week. We were measuring stuff that was heavier than scissors, and that were lighter than scissors - Ana We had to do some questions. At the end, we had to make our own questions. I weight a visual journal and a book. The visual journal was heavier - Ayla During this, at the end of what Ayla was doing, we tested scissors, 6 dominoes, 2 glue sticks and a wooden cube. The heaviest was the wooden cube - Alyssa. We also we exploring magnets. We worked on a few different design challenges. We did magnet missions and we had use magnets to solve the problems. For example, when a guy kept on losing his notes from an envelope, we had to use a magnet to help - Charlie We tried to solve the real life problem:
We have a lot of litter on our school playground. Design a magnetic device to help solve this problem. In writing this week we worked on making clear instructions so you don't make any mistakes. - Hera We were working on "How-To" writing, and worked on giving instructions on how to create our insects that we made with Mr. Steve! We had a modified field trip in our own classroom! We looked for shapes in different animals. Here are some examples we did. We did all types of animals in the wild, but not all of them! Probably most of them are in Calgary- Adam We also looked at biofacts from the animals:
-deer -osprey -red tailed fox -hare -duck We watched a video of how to draw a bee. Then we went outside on a bug hunt and we looked for pollinators and pollination evidence. We sketched dandelions, ladybugs, butterflies, flowers and more! - Roshan Pollination is something that bees do. The pollen gets stuck on their bee's fuzzy fur. Then, the bee brings it to another flower. Then, the flower grows a new fruit or a flower. Then it keeps repeating - Hera You must be wondering what that white thing she's wearing. It is basically a thing you wear when you get honey from the farm honeycombs. This is a bee keeper who visited our class to show us what bee keepers do. We also got to taste a little bit of honey! One was light and one was dark. - Reid She showed us a bee frame and we got to touch the frame. It was bumpy and squishy and smelled really good! - Adaa We had a stuck story about a bug that got stuck. This week we finished our stories. Then we read it and did a little sketch. - Ben After we finished our stories, we did a little checklist to check to make sure our work was awesome! - Mrs. Gregoire We also made a stuck story that we only used 2 hours for. It was about a guy trapped in a room and trying to get out. It took 2 tries that failed and one try that actually worked - Roshan We were making bee posters to help the bees! We have little facts inside about bees - Adam We made posters that had interesting facts and things we should not use like pesticides on crops. - Charlie Our goal was to write more than 3 facts about honeybees. We made pictures out of paper and we did fruits too - Lily We made insects with Mr. Steve! It was very fun. I don't know which one I like the best - Alyssa
This week, our last step was to paint our body for our insect. Then, we got metallic paint and did some on our insects. Mr. Steve said: "do not cover the whole body or it will be too shiny!" The metallic paint was shiny! We had super fun! - Hera We made bees, dragonflies, flies, beetles, open winged beetles, and moths. We painted them and did our best and we learned how to do scrafito and graphite to transfer your drawing to another paper - Roshan. This week on Wednesday we went to the Artist. He is really kind. We are making a bug. The first thing we did was make our wings. Then, we sharpied over our wings. Then, we did a sketch with graphite (the lead that you find in pencils), and put it onto our good copy. - Cole M. We worked on our Slides. We were finishing it. We will present next week- Ayla In gym we were doing Volleyball. We worked on bumping - Ben We are working on Tiny Hero posters in Math. We are on Chapter 22. We are working on 3D stuff. We took glue, marshmallows and toothpicks to make the librarian's desk. - Isla Yesterday we made the Miss. Cavendish's cupboard with little books that are Eddie's size. We made the cabinets out of paper nets. They were in the shape of a cube - Cole P. We wrote Tiny Hero responses - Adam This week we have worked on a Stuck Story. It is the insect we are writing about in our Google Slides. By the way, we are also almost done our Google Slides (well most of us) - Reid We have read "The Big Book of Bugs." I liked the page about the ladybug - Alyssa We were writing about our insect, how it got stuck, where it got stuck. The six boxes were: somebody, somewhere, wanted, but (with one "t"), so, then. It was pretty fun doing this because I had lots of ideas stuck in my head - Hera For Word Work we worked on a honeybee thing. We learned about their lifecycle - Azalea
In Math we were doing challenges to create Ferny Creek library from the book "Tiny Hero." - Adam We had to take blocks and make our library. We used 80 blocks and then we traced them - Ayla Our first step was to make an outline of the library and leave some space for the library. That's where Room 19 would go - Adaa Then, our next step was to get some string and get the two paperclips. You tape the string onto your paper. You count how much paper clips it took to go all the way from the classroom to the door of the library - Hera. We made blueberry footprints of Eddie getting from the classroom to the library. He was very happy that he got a Blueberry. After that, at Chapter 14, we did some writing about Eddie writing a note to the librarian, Mrs. Grisch, who wants to destroy the library to make it a testing place. - Lily After that, we had to make the story-time carpet. Our bonus challenge was to add two square pillows on it. The story time carpet had to be square - Brinn In my group, we also added the things that he saw along the way like a raisin, a scary spider and a blue shoe - Anabia This week we also watched a video of how insects protect themselves. An example of a way they protect themselves is camouflage - Roshan The other ways are: warn, disrupt and startle. - Alyssa Did you know that the monarch butterfly is actually poisonous because the leaves it eats as a caterpillar has some toxic stuff in it. Once it turns into a butterfly, it still has that toxic stuff in it, from when it was in the cocoon. It proves that monarch butterflies are poisonous - Charlie Did you know that main colours of warn are: black, yellow and red? - Adaa We also harvested our hydroponics this week and made a big salad! Then, we got to eat it and we brought our own toppings for our salad - Azalea Did you know that the biggest salad is called the "Mustard Green" and the smallest one that we grew was "Swiss Chard" because it had no light - Hera Here are some quotes that Mrs. Gregoire overheard while we ate our salad: "salad-tastic!" "crunchy" "yummy" "Best...snack...ever!" "It tastes so good!" "Everything tastes good with dressing...well... maybe not donuts" "I could eat this all day!" "It tastes like a salad explosion!" In math this week, we have been working on word problems - Ana In math this week, we were working back into our memories for adding and subtraction for 2-digit numbers. We were using our strategies for base ten blocks, stacking, and pull apart. I forgot how to do Base-Tens for adding! Oops! - Hera We have been working on a problem about being nice to everyone. If one person gave three people compliments, and those three people gave three more people compliments, and those people gave three more people compliments...etc...how many people would receive compliments after 5 days? - Mrs. Gregoire and Alyssa On Thursday we did Honey Graham Crackers Math. It was Three Act Math and we had to find out how many were in the box altogether. The answer was 108 - Cole M. We watched a video of the first act and one of the rectangle crackers counted as one cracker - Adaa Link for the videos to this problem: https://gfletchy.com/graham-cracker/ Check out some of our strategies below: This week in Science we were looking for bugs and then we described it on our green sheet of paper. Brinn had a ladybug on her hat! Most of the kids found a chrysalis and some kids found beetles, and lots of kids found ants too! - Lily We had a piece of paper that was green. You had to draw a sketch and in the other box you had to describe it - Adaa Here are some things we captured: We also were working on Inquiry Stations. We were looking at bugs, drawing them, looking at facts about them, were looking at a wasp nest (it was called a paper wasp). - Adam We also got to look on the iPads. I learned that caterpillars get bigger and bigger and flies can taste with their feet - Roshan Did you know that cockroaches can live up to nine days without their head??! - Hera Did you know that spiders can live underwater for more This week in writing we did a reflection on the book we are still reading called Tiny Hero. In the book there is a bug named Eddie and he goes to the library to save his Aunt Min. When he found her, she is hurt. - Isla
Other things we did at school this week were: In gym we were doing gymnastics and we were doing positions that we could stay on the ground with a bunch of different body parts and not just our feet - Anabia We have a new gym teacher, her name is Mrs. Metouche - Ayla This week at school we made comics about Global Warming - Anabia These pictures show some of our Hope Monsters and Global Warming monsters for our comic - Roshan We were only allowed to use three or four parts to our real comic, except for introducing it. - Brinn This week at school we did Onomatopeia. This means a sound effect - Alyssa This week in Math we worked on problem solving. The problems mixed addition and subtraction this week. We talked about which strategies were most efficient, and which strategies we preferred. Today we did a Three Act Math. It was skittles in a lightbulb. It was called Bright Idea. After he didn't eat them, but I wish he did. Maybe he did, but not on camera - Cole M. The question we had to answer is 19 + 15 + 19 + 17 + 21. We had to try and find the correct answer. If we finished it, we had an extension to finish. If we finished the extension, we worked on the carrot problem - Charlie For the Three Act Skittles Problem, we estimated something that was too high, too low and just right. Some people chose really low numbers, and it was actually 91! - Hera Click here to see the video that started our thinking: https://gfletchy.com/bright-idea/ Some students solved this problem using the Base-Ten Strategy, some using the Pull Apart Strategy, and others using the Stacking Strategy. Here is another example of a problem we worked on in math class this week. We also did the "Pringle Ringle" Three Act Problem this week.
We did skits that were about The Arctic, Acadia and Prairies - Lily We got to pick our partners on Monday. If you weren't there, you were paired up with whoever else wasn't there, on Tuesday. - Brinn Every person had a different community and we would write a script and photocopy it so everyone had one - Adaa Ms. Bell and Mrs. Gregoire they had a little skit about two communities: Acadia and the Prairies. It was kind of funny. Charlie brought in some stuffies from Acadia... and Mrs. Gregoire might have used one in her "lobster sandwich." - Reid If you don't know what a skit is, it is a little play - Adaa We brought some items to wear for this little skit - Lily We started reading "Tiny Hero." We are sketching and writing about it in our Visual Journals - Roshan In gym this week we are doing gymnastics! - Ana We had to use body parts to make a shape. For example, we had the challenge of using 4 body parts, but no feet to move! - Lily We went on a field trip to Edworthy Park. We did a lot of fun stuff! Check out the full blog post here to see what we were up to - Adaa We did the math problems where we had to use stacking with regrouping and Base-Tens - Charlie We made three poems this week. We chose one poem to write on the computer and print it out. I might share this with you at conferences - Hera We shared our Google Slides with the class. We made some poems about our animal - Ayla We learned about Global Warming. We watched a fun video about it and learned how it affects the world. - Cole M. For example to help global warming we can plant a tree, recycle, and use less energy - Lily Here are some of the poems we wrote after journaling at Edworthy Park Click here to see the video on Global Warming that we watched.
